The Importance of Being Earnest for Today
I read this book a while back, "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). What a great story. This is as defined by the Wikipedia as a classic comedy performed for the public on February 14, 1895 at the St. James' Theatre in London, and is regarded by many critics and scholars as being the wittiest play in the English language. Recently, going through my Netflix playlist, I came across a movie made from the classic, and watched it with absolute fascination! Yes, it is really funny and clever.
I started thinking about the society back then versus now. The meaning of the word, Earnest. Looked it up and it meant, serious in intention, purpose, or effort; sincerely zealous, showing depth and sincerity of feeling, seriously important; demanding or receiving serious attention, fervent, intent, determined, purposeful, industrious, ambitious, genuineness, trustworthiness, and absence of superficiality. What a wonderful word, EARNEST.
Can we readily find these attributes in ourselves and others nowadays? How often do we come across a really genuine friend? Who do we look up to as being trustworthy, and sincere? How about our own attitude towards our daily ways? Are we purposeful and industrious?
Even though this classic, "The Importance of Being Earnest" is a comedy, there lies a depth of serious intention, reflecting to us, the audience a lesson to be learned. Let's put away our ipads, phones, computers, facebook, twitters, and the like for a day, and start thinking about building an Earnest relationship with the people around us.
Enjoy the sunshine and take a walk in the park...
